Ornamental

by Rachelle Craig

Ornamental is a foundation paper pieced quilt inspired by icicle ornaments on a Christmas tree. The basic shape used is a simple square, yet the variable block size and placement of the columns creates movement not always expected with squares. To minimize fabric waste, guidelines are provided on the foundation templates to ensure proper placement of each piece.

The design was inspired by icicle ornaments on a Christmas tree. They swayed slightly as they dangled on the tree which translated into the undulating effect made by varying the vertical placement of each ornament.

Rachelle is a former construction engineer turned designer pursuing her long-time dream of designing quilt patterns. One summer as a bored teenager, she taught herself how to quilt using library books and has not looked back since. She enjoys the entire process of quilt making from the spark of inspiration to watching a written design turn into a tangible quilt. Rachelle’s quilts often include geometric designs using solid fabrics in bright colors on dark backgrounds; she buys Kona Solids’ Black fabric by the bolt.

While staying at home during 2020, Rachelle turned to the online quilting community to for support and inspiration during the pandemic and is very appreciative of the friends she has made along the way. She is a member of the recently founded “Modern Fusion” Individual Member Guild which meets online monthly. Rachelle lives in rural Wisconsin with her husband, two cats, and a herd of cows.
