Intersection

by Margo Yang

By itself, this block may look plain and simple, but when set into a quilt layout, the real beauty emerges. With a change of the block orientation and color placements, secondary designs appear. There are so many possibilities for this block. The most charming aspect of block is its simplicity which makes it perfect for beginner quilters.

In March 2018, the VMQG issued a challenge to its members to take the Traditional Sawtooth Star block and make it modern. We could change the components of the traditional block around, change the color, formation or delete parts altogether. I took the challenge and came up with this block.

Margo has been quilting for almost 20 years, mostly self-taught. She and her friends often made baby rag quilts for expecting mothers at church. After making a dozen or more of those, she came up with a new technique for rag quilts called Faux Rag Quilting. Her book, ‘Soft & Cozy Keepsakes – Faux Rag Quilting’, was published by AQS in 2016. Later that year, she attended an event at her local quilt shop, The Quilt Emporium, where Alissa Haight Carlton was a guest speaker. There she got bitten by the Modern Quit bug and never looked back. Shortly after that, she joined the Valley MQG where she’s very happy to be among her quilter friends. She loves her quilting community. She is known among friends for her minimalist style. She loves bold, simple geometric shapes in quilting. Margo continues to have her works published in various magazines and recently placed second in the Mid-Century Modern category in the Mid Atlantic Quilt Show.
